Garnett Genuis

Garnett Genuis has done genuinely important work on the Uyghur genocide file and on foreign interference — he's one of the MPs who pushed those issues before they became mainstream and deserves credit for it. That's real parliamentary work that made a difference. Where I struggle with him is the gap between his human rights internationalism and his domestic social conservative positions. He can't have it both ways — either rights are universal and worth fighting for, or they're selective. The inconsistency doesn't erase the good work, but it does limit how far I can go in recommending him as a voice on rights issues generally.

Garnett Genuis represents Sherwood Park-Fort Saskatchewan as a Conservative Member of Parliament and has served as the party's critic for various foreign affairs and international development files. He has been among the most vocal Canadian parliamentarians on human rights issues abroad — particularly on the persecution of Uyghurs in China, religious freedom globally, and the treatment of Christians and minority religious communities in countries where they face violence. On these files, Genuis brings genuine commitment that goes beyond partisan positioning. He has worked across party lines with Liberal and NDP MPs on motions related to Uyghur genocide recognition, on foreign interference, and on international religious freedom. He helped establish the framework that led Canada to formally recognize the treatment of Uyghurs as genocide — a consequential parliamentary achievement that required sustained advocacy against government reluctance. His Conservative party-line positions — on carbon pricing, on fiscal policy, on immigration levels — are more predictably aligned with his party's platform and less distinctive. He is a more interesting and consequential parliamentarian on foreign affairs than on domestic economic files, where his contributions are more standard opposition messaging. He is also one of the more socially conservative voices in the Conservative caucus, which creates tensions between his progressive internationalism on human rights and his domestic social policy positions. These tensions exist in many political careers and need not disqualify the human rights work, but they are worth noting.
