Waterloo Region — home to major universities and a growing tech sector — saw significant housing affordability deterioration over that decade. Young people graduating from Waterloo and Laurier couldn't afford to stay in the community. Rents doubled. She was part of a government that talked constantly about the middle class and affordability and didn't deliver enough of either. After nearly ten years in Parliament, the people she represented deserved more than talk.

Students from Waterloo universities were bidding for rentals against established workers. She was part of a government that talked about affordability constantly and delivered insufficient results. After nearly a decade in Parliament it's fair to ask what the most important outcome was for ordinary people in her riding. I struggle to name it.

Bardish Chagger made history as the first woman to serve as Government House Leader — a significant achievement worth recognizing. But her record in cabinet was ultimately defined by the WE Charity scandal, which ended her ministerial career. The WE Charity affair represented one of the most embarrassing conflicts of interest for the Trudeau government, and Chagger was removed from cabinet as part of the fallout. In 2024 she also resigned unexpectedly from her role as chair of the powerful Procedure and House Affairs Committee. When Mark Carney became PM in 2025, she was not returned to cabinet — four years removed from her last ministerial role. A decade in Parliament with early cabinet promise that was cut short by a scandal her government chose to manage rather than confront honestly. Her constituents in Waterloo deserved a more sustained track record of accountability.
