Adriana LaGrange has been Alberta's education minister during one of the most contentious curriculum debates in the province's history. Years of back-and-forth over the K-6 curriculum — involving multiple drafts, extensive criticism from teachers and child development experts, and significant political energy — have produced a policy outcome that remains contested while the actual problems in Alberta's classrooms (teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, underfunded special needs) have received less attention. I'm not sure that's the right priority when you have kids sitting in portables in January in Alberta.

The policy bandwidth consumed by curriculum debates has been bandwidth not available for addressing these structural pressures. LaGrange has implemented the Smith government's directives on curriculum while also managing the operational demands of a large and growing school system. She has been consistent and methodical in her approach, even when the approach has been contested. Whether the curriculum that emerges will represent an improvement in student learning outcomes — the only measure that ultimately matters — will take years of data to assess.
