Heather Stefanson

Heather Stefanson served as Premier of Manitoba from November 2021 to October 2023, becoming the province's first female premier following Brian Pallister's resignation. During her tenure, Manitoba's healthcare system continued to struggle with severe staffing shortages, ER overcrowding, and rural hospital closures that left vulnerable communities without adequate care. Housing affordability worsened across Winnipeg and other urban centres. The NDP, led by Wab Kinew, won the 2023 provincial election in a decisive result, and Stefanson subsequently resigned as MLA in April 2024. The NDP's victory in her own Tuxedo riding — held by Progressive Conservatives since 1981 — was a meaningful statement by residents. While Stefanson governed with a generally moderate tone, the structural failures in healthcare and affordability that defined her term represent missed opportunities for meaningful public service delivery.
