Aleana Young

Aleana Young serves as a BC Green MLA and represents the thoughtful, evidence-based environmental politics that the Green Party at its best offers. The BC Greens have consistently advocated for climate action, densification of housing near transit, and evidence-based social policy — positions that, taken together, represent a coherent economic and environmental vision. The challenge for Young and the Greens is that principled politics requires power to implement, and the BC Greens remain a caucus of modest size exerting influence at the margins of a legislature dominated by the NDP and BC United/Conservative forces. Their leverage on housing — supporting NDP densification legislation — has been positive. Their climate work has been substantive. Where I push back gently: the Green economic platform, while environmentally serious, has not always grappled with the full cost implications of its proposals for working- and middle-class British Columbians who are already stretched to the limit. Carbon pricing, building retrofit requirements, and electrification mandates all have real costs that fall disproportionately on people with lower incomes unless carefully designed with rebates and transitions. Young is a capable MLA who brings genuine intellectual commitment to her work. BC needs serious climate policy and serious housing policy simultaneously — and making the case that these are compatible rather than competing is the Greens' most important contribution. Making that case clearly and specifically to working families, not just to the already-converted, is the harder work that remains.
