Northwestern Ontario deserves better than what it's getting

Greg Rickford is an Ontario Conservative MPP for Kenora-Rainy River and has held multiple cabinet roles. Northwestern Ontario โ€” Indigenous communities, resource towns, remote areas โ€” is chronically underinvested. Clean water issues. Healthcare access that means people are flying to Thunder Bay for things that should be handled locally. High costs for fuel, food, everything. He's represented this region for years at both the federal and provincial levels. You would expect, after all that time in government, to see measurable improvement in the lives of people in these communities. The improvement has not matched the representation.

Northern Ontario is consistently underserved and he's the minister for it

Greg Rickford is Ontario's minister responsible for Northern Ontario. Northern communities deal with healthcare shortages, dangerous road infrastructure, high food costs due to remoteness, and a persistent sense that Queen's Park doesn't care about their reality. As the minister specifically assigned to represent these interests in cabinet, his role is to be the voice for people the system often ignores. I don't see Northern Ontario's basic needs being met at a level that matches what a wealthy province can afford. The healthcare situation in smaller Northern communities is especially difficult. If you're the Northern minister and Northern healthcare is failing, that is your file. That is your failure.

Indigenous communities excluded from decisions about their own territories

Greg Rickford holds the most sensitive cluster of portfolios in the Ford cabinet: Northern Development, Indigenous Affairs, and Ring of Fire Economic and Community Partnerships. The Ring of Fire โ€” a massive mineral deposit in Ontario's Far North โ€” is one of the most significant economic and rights issues in the province. The record of consultation is poor. Chiefs from Neskantaga and Eabametoong publicly rebuked Rickford for excluding them from road development discussions, accusing him of selectively engaging only communities that already support development and dodging everyone else. The Land Defence Alliance rejected meetings with Rickford outright and demanded to go over his head directly to the Premier. Nishnawbe Aski Nation condemned the Ford government's approach as "an overreach of provincial authority" that fails to honour the Crown-First Nations relationship. Economic reconciliation requires genuine partnership โ€” not a minister who manages optics by engaging selectively. This is not what good faith looks like.
