Adrien Sala serves as Manitoba's Minister of Finance under the Kinew NDP government and is the architect of Manitoba's fiscal direction since 2023. The NDP inherited a province that Brian Pallister had run with fiscal discipline bordering on austerity — a record that frustrated public sector workers and service users but produced balanced budgets. Sala and the Kinew government made a deliberate choice to increase spending and accept deficits, framing this as investment in services that had been neglected. The question is whether Manitobans are getting results that justify the borrowing. Healthcare wait times remain serious. School staffing shortages persist. Social services are stressed. The spending is happening, but the transformation of service quality is not yet visible in the daily experience of most Manitoba families. Manitoba's net debt continues to grow. Every dollar borrowed today is a dollar that future Manitobans — including young people already struggling with student loans and unaffordable housing — will pay back with interest. The Sala approach treats deficits as a sign of compassion. I would argue that running up debt during a period when families are already underwater financially is a different kind of burden on the people government is supposed to serve. The NDP has governing instincts that come from the right place. But good intentions don't pay the bills — for the government or for the families watching their grocery bills climb while the province's credit card balance rises. Manitoba families need results, not borrowed time.
