Jonathan Wilkinson has held two of the most complex portfolios in the federal cabinet: Environment and Climate Change (2019–2021) and Natural Resources (2021–2025). Together, these roles made him the federal minister most responsible for managing Canada's contradictory position as both a major fossil fuel exporter and a country with legally binding net-zero commitments. The contradiction is real and Wilkinson has handled it more honestly than most. He has consistently argued that Canada cannot simply turn off its energy sector — that managed transition is the only economically viable path — while simultaneously advancing clean energy investment, critical minerals strategy, and emissions cap policy. This is not a comfortable position politically, and it draws fire from both sides: environmentalists say he moves too slowly, the resource sector says he undermines investment certainty. On the critical minerals file, Canada's positioning — with the federal government taking an active industrial policy role in securing supply chains for battery minerals — represents a genuine strategic shift. The transition investments secured under his watch, in partnership with Champagne, represent real long-term bets on Canada's economic future in a decarbonizing world. Where the criticism is fair: Canada's oil and gas emissions cap — long promised, long delayed — took years longer than it should have to reach even draft form. Methane regulations, while improved, remain below what the science demands on timeline. The federal-provincial relationship on energy transition remained contentious throughout his tenure, with Alberta and Saskatchewan routinely challenging federal jurisdiction. Wilkinson is a serious, informed minister on a file where serious information matters. His record is mixed by necessity, but the direction is right.
