Marty Klyne

Marty Klyne brings something to the Senate that is underrepresented in Canadian legislative bodies: Métis heritage combined with a business and corporate governance background. That combination allows him to engage with Indigenous economic development questions from both the rights perspective and the practical business perspective simultaneously, which is where most of the real work on resource development and Indigenous participation actually happens. His contributions on resource legislation — asking how Indigenous communities can participate in and benefit from the development on their territories rather than being bypassed by it — reflect a constructive rather than purely adversarial approach. Canada needs more of this kind of practical bridge-building on Indigenous economic participation.

Marty Klyne was appointed to the Senate of Canada in 2018, representing Saskatchewan, and brought to the chamber a background in corporate governance, business development, and Indigenous economic development that reflects the particular combination of experience the independent appointments process was designed to recruit. He is of Métis ancestry and has been active on Indigenous economic participation issues — not from a legal rights perspective primarily, but from a business and economic development angle: how do Indigenous communities build the capital, governance structures, and partnerships that allow them to participate in and benefit from resource development on their traditional territories rather than being bypassed by it? His Senate contributions have reflected this background: engagement on natural resource legislation through the lens of Indigenous economic participation, on corporate governance and regulatory frameworks where his business experience is relevant, and on Saskatchewan's particular economic and constitutional interests in a Senate where Prairie representation has historically been limited relative to Central Canada's weight. Klyne is not among the Senate's most publicly visible members, which is less a comment on his contribution than on the structural invisibility of Senate committee work relative to House debates. His contributions in the committees he serves reflect the substantive expertise he brings.
