Gary Anandasangaree served as Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister. He brought a respectful and genuine tone to a portfolio that had been marked by years of broken promises. That tone matters. But the pace of change on the ground — in housing, clean water, community safety, and economic opportunity for Indigenous Canadians — is still not matching the urgency of the need. Generations of Indigenous people have heard sincere-sounding commitments from federal ministers. What they need is a government that actually moves at the speed of the crisis, not the speed of consultation timelines and bureaucratic processes.

Gary Anandasangaree served as Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister. It's one of the most important portfolios in the federal government. He came in with genuine commitment to moving reconciliation forward. The truth is that progress has been painfully slow. Indigenous communities continue to face housing crises far worse than what urban Canadians experience. Clean water advisories have dragged on for years. The cost of food in remote Northern communities is staggering. Good intentions matter but so does the pace of actual improvement for the most marginalized people in Canada. Years of reconciliation announcements and the lived reality on the ground hasn't changed fast enough.

There are legitimate questions about whether Gary Anandasangaree was ever prepared for the Public Safety portfolio. During House questioning, he revealed he did not know what an RPAL was — a Restricted Possession and Acquisition Licence, a basic term that any minister responsible for firearms regulation should know — or what the CFSC (Canadian Firearms Safety Course) was. Beyond that knowledge gap, he was recorded telling an acquaintance not to worry about turning in a banned firearm because police "lack the resources" to enforce the buyback — effectively admitting the government's own signature firearms policy was unenforceable. He also faced scrutiny for past advocacy on behalf of an individual barred from Canada due to involvement with the Tamil Tigers — an individual whose immigration now falls under a file Anandasangaree oversees. The Conservatives called for his resignation and the Globe and Mail's editorial board agreed. Canadians deserve a Public Safety Minister who understands the file.
