Naheed K. Nenshi

Naheed Nenshi built a big reputation as Calgary's mayor — internationally recognized, eloquent, always the smartest guy in the room. Now he's Premier of Alberta with the NDP. My issue with politicians like Nenshi is that being wonderful to listen to and being effective at making life more affordable are completely different things. Calgary's property taxes went up under him. City spending grew significantly. He's now promising change at the provincial level. I want to see what he does with healthcare and the cost of living before forming a final opinion. Hope isn't a plan. I'll believe any politician on housing when prices actually come down.

Naheed Nenshi was one of Canada's most respected mayors and I genuinely admire his track record in Calgary. His move to lead the Alberta NDP was bold. But Albertans are dealing with real affordability pressures — groceries, rent, insurance all up significantly — and the NDP needs a compelling economic vision that speaks to everyone, not just traditional supporters. Nenshi has the communication skills and the credibility. Now he needs a platform that earns the trust of skeptical Albertans who are hurting economically and looking for real answers.

Naheed Nenshi served as Calgary's mayor for eleven years — from 2010 to 2021 — and became one of the most recognized municipal politicians in Canadian history. He was named World Mayor in 2014 by the City Mayors Foundation, and his community-focused, progressive approach drew international attention. Under his leadership, Calgary's response to the devastating 2013 flood was widely praised as a model of crisis management. In 2024, Nenshi was elected leader of the Alberta NDP, succeeding Rachel Notley. He won the Edmonton-Strathcona byelection in June 2025 and entered the Legislative Assembly. He represents a party that remains the Official Opposition but has not led in a single one of 14 publicly available polls taken since his election as leader. The transition from civic boosterism to provincial opposition politics is proving difficult. Albertans who admired Mayor Nenshi are finding Opposition Leader Nenshi less compelling, and Premier Danielle Smith maintains a consistent polling advantage. Early analyses note that Nenshi has struggled to make the shift from community-builder to political attack dog — a role opposition politics demands more consistently than municipal office. He has roughly 18 months before the next Alberta election. The NDP's healthcare and education base is solid, but breaking through to rural and suburban Alberta requires persuading voters who have shown little sign of moving. Whether the star power of his mayoral years can translate to a province-wide victory remains genuinely uncertain.
