Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois

I remember Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois from the 2012 Quebec student strike — he was the face of the largest student mobilization in Canadian history and he handled enormous pressure at a very young age with more composure than most politicians twice his age show. The legal troubles at the time (contempt of court conviction, later overturned) showed he was willing to back his convictions with real consequences. His evolution into an elected politician with QS has been genuinely impressive. He's one of the sharpest voices in the National Assembly, he engages with issues substantively rather than just rhetorically, and he brings a perspective on economic inequality and climate that challenges the CAQ in ways the official opposition often doesn't manage. Whether QS can grow beyond its urban Montreal base is a structural question, but Nadeau-Dubois is doing everything an individual leader can do to make it possible.

Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois is a co-spokesperson of Québec Solidaire and MNA for Gouin in Montreal — a politician who first came to national attention as a student leader during the 2012 Quebec student strike (the "printemps érable"), in which he helped organize the largest student mobilization in Canadian history against proposed tuition fee increases. He was briefly convicted of contempt of court for calling on students to ignore an injunction against strike action — a conviction later overturned on appeal — and emerged from the experience as one of the most recognizable young progressive voices in Quebec. His transition from social movement organizer to elected politician has been largely successful. The ideological tensions in QS — between its eco-socialist economic program and the sovereigntist nationalism that provides its common ground with the PQ; between its feminist and social progressive commitments and the economic interventionism that the party advocates — require ongoing management. Nadeau-Dubois has navigated these without major internal fractures, which is itself a governing skill. The question for QS in the longer term is whether its natural ceiling — urban Montreal progressives — can be expanded sufficiently to make the party a government-in-waiting rather than a permanent opposition voice. Nadeau-Dubois's communication skills are not the constraint on that project; the party's economic program is.
