Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has done something genuinely impressive: taken a party that was being written off as a historical artifact and made it competitive again in Quebec politics. His argument that sovereignty is a forward-looking response to contemporary political conditions — not nostalgia for 1995 — resonates with younger Quebecers who weren't there and don't carry the referendum scars. I'm not a sovereigntist. But I can recognize serious political leadership when I see it, and he's brought substantive engagement to his role as opposition leader rather than treating it as a campaign platform. His work in the National Assembly has been credible on fiscal and environmental files beyond the sovereignty question. That earns respect even from people who disagree with his ultimate political project.

Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has done something that most observers of Quebec politics thought was no longer possible: made the Parti Québécois credible and electorally competitive again after a decade of decline. When he took the PQ leadership in 2020, the party was polling in the single digits and its political space had been colonized almost entirely by the CAQ — a party that captured soft nationalists by offering autonomy without the confrontation of sovereignty. His approach has been to reframe sovereignty not as a nostalgic project rooted in 1995 but as a forward-looking response to contemporary political conditions: the limits of Quebec's ability to act on language, culture, environment, and immigration within the federal framework; the sense that Ottawa's fiscal arrangements systematically disadvantage Quebec's preferred policy choices; and the argument that an independent Quebec would have more tools available to build the kind of society Quebecers want. Whether this argument can actually rebuild the majority coalition necessary for a third referendum is genuinely uncertain. The 2022 election gave the PQ 14% of the vote and three seats — a much better trajectory than the party's nadir but still far from governing position. Subsequent polling has been stronger, with St-Pierre Plamondon consistently among the most liked leaders in Quebec regardless of party. His parliamentary work in the National Assembly has been substantive — he engages on fiscal policy, the environment, and constitutional questions with a depth unusual for an opposition leader who isn't yet in striking distance of government. He has built a public profile as a serious politician rather than a protest vehicle, which is the necessary precondition for the PQ's electoral revival he's attempting.
