Michael Chong

Michael Chong has been an MP since 2004 and has built a reputation as one of the more genuinely independent voices in the Conservative caucus. He resigned from Stephen Harper's cabinet over a constitutional principle. He advanced the Reform Act to strengthen caucus independence from leaders. When CSIS intelligence assessed that Chinese officials had targeted him through family members in Hong Kong, he went public rather than accepting a private briefing and staying quiet. That last decision matters. He could have taken the briefing, stayed quiet, and continued his career without disruption. Instead he forced a national conversation about foreign interference in Canadian democracy that the previous years of reports hadn't managed to produce. That's the kind of decision that tests what a politician is actually for. His foreign affairs and China policy positions reflect a coherent strategic framework. He's one of the cleaner records in the House.

Michael Chong has represented Wellington-Halton Hills as a Conservative Member of Parliament since 2004 and is one of the longest-serving members of the current Parliament. He has had a career defined by principled positions taken at personal and political cost: resigning from the Harper cabinet over Quebec nationhood recognition, pushing the Reform Act to give caucuses more independence from leaders, and most significantly, raising alarms about Chinese government interference in Canadian elections and political processes at a time when doing so was uncomfortable for multiple parties. On the China file, Chong's record is unambiguous. He was sanctioned by the Chinese government for his advocacy for Uyghur rights. He disclosed that CSIS had briefed the government about Chinese intelligence operations targeting him personally and that the briefing was not passed to him in a timely way. He called for meaningful action on foreign interference when his own Conservative leadership was reluctant to address it and when the Liberal government was actively downplaying it. He was right. The subsequent foreign interference inquiry, the NSICOP reports, and the CSIS documents that became public all confirmed that his concerns about foreign state interference in Canadian political processes were substantially accurate. Being right about a national security matter when the people responsible for addressing it didn't want to act is a form of public service that deserves recognition. He has also been a consistent voice for conservative fiscal policy with intellectual seriousness — not just talking-point Conservatism but actual engagement with budget methodology and debt trajectory.
