Rob Lantz became PEI Premier in 2023. PEI has always had a quiet, community feel — and then it didn't. The island's housing market, long affordable by Canadian standards, has been completely upended. Seasonal workers and year-round residents compete for the same limited housing stock. Rents have doubled in Charlottetown in five years. Lantz has announced housing programs but the numbers are nowhere near the scale of the problem. I visited family in PEI recently and what I heard was that longtime locals are being pushed out by people fleeing expensive mainland cities. That's a real crisis and it needs a real response — not press releases about modest initiatives.

Provincial legislators are the closest level of government to the people they represent. That means I expect direct access, regular communication, and genuine advocacy for the riding. Cost of living issues — groceries, rent, utilities — are not abstract policy debates, they're what constituents bring to their MLA's office. I want representatives who are visible, accessible, and willing to push back hard when provincial policies hurt families. People voted for a voice in government. They deserve to actually hear it working for them.

Rob Lantz became Premier of Prince Edward Island in February 2026 after one of the more unusual leadership successions in the province's recent history. Following Dennis King's resignation in early 2025, Lantz first served as interim Premier before Ernie Hudson Thompson briefly held the role; Lantz then won the permanent leadership and returned as Premier in February 2026. The path was anything but straightforward, and it has left Islanders with reasonable questions about stability and direction. As a lawyer and long-serving MLA for Charlottetown–Brighton, Lantz brings professional credibility and institutional knowledge to the role. His stated priorities include energy security and reform of Maritime Electric's pricing structure, addressing gaps in primary healthcare access across the Island, improving housing affordability, and greater transparency in land ownership — an issue with deep roots in PEI's history and ongoing relevance to affordability pressures today. It is still early in his premiership. The policy commitments are on the table but outcomes have yet to be measured. What can be assessed is how he manages the province's relationship with Ottawa, how he positions PEI through evolving trade pressures on the East Coast, and whether the healthcare and energy commitments translate into meaningful timelines and delivery. Islanders have seen leadership transitions before. What they want now is consistency and follow-through — not just steady hands during the transition, but a premier who can show the Island's needs are being met with the same attention they received during the campaign for his leadership. Reviewed as a Prince Edward Islander expecting results that match the Island's needs, not just the transition's narrative.
