Matthew Green

Matthew Green inherited the NDP's worst federal result in the party's history. Seven seats. No official party status. A fraction of the committee seats, staff resources, and media coverage that comes with being a meaningful parliamentary force. That's the job he signed up for when he won the leadership. What he brings to it: he's a compelling communicator, he's willing to name uncomfortable things directly, and he won his Hamilton seat in a result that shows he's built a genuine local political relationship. The question for the NDP now isn't who their leader is — it's whether the party can articulate what it represents distinctly enough from the Liberals that progressives have a reason to choose it. Green is doing the rebuild. Whether the NDP survives as a national force is a bigger structural question than any one leader can answer.
