Lori Idlout

Lori Idlout represents Nunavut as a New Democratic Party Member of Parliament — the vast federal riding that encompasses the entirety of Canada's newest territory, covering two million square kilometres and twenty-five communities, most accessible only by air, with an Inuit population whose issues — food security, housing, mental health, climate change impacts — are among the most acute in Canada but consistently among the most invisible in national political debate. She came to Parliament from a background in Indigenous rights advocacy and legal aid work, which gives her a substantive understanding of the specific legal and jurisdictional questions that affect Inuit communities — the interplay between Nunavut's land claim agreement, the territory's political institutions, and the federal government's obligations that have been delivered unevenly for decades. The NDP's 2025 collapse to seven seats did not eliminate her Nunavut seat, which reflects the specific political relationship she has built with the territory rather than national party performance. Northern and Indigenous communities often develop personal political loyalties to representatives who demonstrate genuine engagement with their specific situations, and Idlout has done that work. She is one of the few federal politicians who regularly brings the Arctic to national debate — not as romantic wilderness but as a place where Canadian citizens live with inadequate infrastructure, high food costs, and the most direct consequences of climate change.
