Danielle Smith has built her political identity around one central idea: standing up for Alberta against Ottawa. On that narrow measure, her base finds her compelling. She is vocal, unafraid of confrontation, and speaks directly to the frustrations many Albertans feel about federal overreach into their province's resources and economy. The problem is that fighting is not the same as governing. The Alberta Sovereignty Act generated significant noise but raised serious questions about constitutional overreach of its own. Controversial statements , particularly around pandemic policy and the unvaccinated , revealed a willingness to say whatever resonates politically, regardless of accuracy or consequence. That is not the mark of a leader who can be fully trusted with the responsibilities of office. Alberta is a wealthy, resource-rich province with enormous potential. Its Premier should be channeling that strength into building something lasting : better infrastructure, economic diversification, improved public services. Instead, the dominant energy has been reactive and combative, more focused on the fight than the outcome. Smith speaks for Alberta loudly. The question is whether she is truly governing it well.

Alberta has resource wealth that other provinces would love to have. So why are regular families still struggling so much? My grocery bill, rent, and utilities are all way up and I don't see Premier Smith doing nearly enough about it. There's lots of energy spent fighting Ottawa — okay, some of that's fair — but not enough fighting for the family trying to make ends meet every month. Come on. Use that resource wealth for the people who live here.

I had some hope when Premier Smith took over but the results have been mixed. Alberta has oil wealth but families are still feeling the pinch. Rent, groceries, utilities — all up dramatically. The UCP government spends a lot of energy fighting Ottawa but what about actually fighting for Alberta families struggling day to day? There is a lot of political theatre here but the affordability measures feel thin. Albertans deserve leadership, not just culture war talking points.

Danielle Smith has served as Premier of Alberta since October 2022, leading the United Conservative Party government through one of the most turbulent and consequential periods in the province's relationship with the rest of Canada. Her record is one of genuine policy ambition paired with serious governance concerns. On the credit side, Smith's government passed more than 30 pieces of legislation in 2025 alone, including a sweeping reorganization of Alberta's health-care system — disbanding Alberta Health Services as the provincial health authority and restructuring it as a hospital service provider only. She secured a deal with Prime Minister Carney to advance an oil pipeline from Alberta to the BC coast, and by May 2026 had reached an agreement on a carbon pricing framework and pipeline construction timeline. On energy and provincial rights, Smith has been an effective and persistent advocate for Alberta's economic interests in federal negotiations. The concerns are significant and mounting. In May 2026, Smith announced a referendum question on whether Alberta should pursue a path toward separating from Canada — a move that 58% of Albertans disapprove of, according to polling. A citizen recall petition was approved against her in December 2025, making her the first premier in nearly 90 years to face such a process. She invoked the notwithstanding clause to force striking teachers back to work until 2028. A private trip to Saudi Arabia and the UAE — flown on the Saudi government's private plane — was only revealed publicly months later, raising serious transparency concerns. Her government also faces allegations of awarding contracts to individuals with close UCP ties. Her appearances on Breitbart News and at PragerU events in Florida drew widespread criticism nationally. Smith is an energetic and determined leader, but the combination of a recall petition, a separatism referendum, and repeated transparency issues paints a troubling picture of governance.
