Michael Chong is the kind of MP that makes you think parliament can still do important things. His work on foreign interference — being personally targeted by the Chinese government and then pushing for a serious public inquiry into it — was conducted with restraint and seriousness when a less measured person might have made it about themselves. He stayed focused on the institutional problem rather than the personal grievance. He's been in Parliament since 2004 and has managed to remain principled throughout — he resigned from cabinet over a dispute about Quebec's status as a nation, which is exactly the kind of principled stand that almost never happens and that cost him real political capital. Michael Chong has served as the Member of Parliament for Wellington-Halton Hills since 2004 — over two decades — and has built a reputation across party lines as one of Parliament's more principled members. Two episodes define his career. The first was his 2006 resignation from cabinet over the Conservative government's motion recognizing Québécois as a nation within Canada. He opposed the motion on grounds that it was constitutionally undefined and potentially destabilizing. Resigning from cabinet over a matter of principle is genuinely rare in Canadian politics. Whatever one thinks of his position, the act itself demonstrated that he would not simply go along. The second — and more recent — was his central role in exposing Beijing's interference in Canadian elections. Chong was specifically targeted by Chinese intelligence because of his advocacy for Uyghur rights and his motion in Parliament condemning China's treatment of Uyghurs. When it emerged that the Canadian Security Intelligence Service had briefed the Prime Minister's office about the targeting and the information had not reached Chong himself, the scandal forced a public inquiry into foreign interference in Canadian elections. Chong's position on China is not simply partisan — it comes from genuine engagement with the human rights situation and a recognition that Canada has been slow to defend its democratic institutions from authoritarian interference. He is right about this, and the fact that a sitting MP had to fight his own government to be told he was a target of foreign intelligence is a damning indictment of how the system handled the file. He is not a perfect politician. His Reform Act, designed to give caucuses more power over leaders, passed but has had modest practical effect. But on the issues that define his public service, he has been consistent and correct.
