Iain Rankin was Nova Scotia's Liberal Premier for less than a year in 2021. He came in during the pandemic with the province's housing market just starting its dramatic rise. He didn't stay long enough to implement much before losing to Tim Houston. I can't hold him fully responsible for outcomes he didn't have time to produce. But the affordability deterioration in Nova Scotia — particularly in Halifax — started accelerating exactly during his watch and the response wasn't quick or decisive enough. Voters were impatient and that was understandable. People were already seeing the ground shift under their feet.

I can't give him a fair grade on outcomes he didn't have time to produce. What I can say is that the affordability crisis in Nova Scotia began accelerating exactly around the time he was Premier and neither his government nor the ones that followed responded quickly enough. The election result reflected voter impatience, which is understandable when people are struggling.

Iain Rankin became Premier of Nova Scotia in February 2021 and called an election just six months later — an election his Liberals lost decisively to Tim Houston's Progressive Conservatives. The defining issue was healthcare: nearly 70,000 Nova Scotians were on a waitlist for a family doctor, nursing burnout was acute, and Rankin's government had no convincing answer for either crisis. His opponents ran explicitly on healthcare and won. In January 2022, he resigned as Liberal leader, accepting responsibility for the defeat and acknowledging he had failed to communicate a clear vision for the province's future. That is at least more honest than many politicians who lose and refuse to own it. But the reality is that Nova Scotia's healthcare system was in crisis on his watch and his brief tenure produced no meaningful breakthrough on the issue that mattered most to residents. The system he inherited he left unchanged.
